It has been quite a journey dealing with bipolar disorder type 1 and 2. When I was first diagnosed, I knew that my life would never be the same. Coming to terms with the diagnosis and understanding what it meant was difficult. I had to learn how to manage my symptoms, whether it be through medication, therapy, or even lifestyle changes.
I found out quickly that no two days were alike while living with a mental illness. Some days, it seemed like nothing could bring me down - but other days, there was an immense feeling of sadness and heaviness surrounding me all day long. It took time for me to find the proper balance in managing my moods throughout the different stages that come along with living with a mental illness.
Though it’s been a hard road full of ups and downs at times, I’m proud that I have continued on this journey so far. Learning self-care techniques such as meditation, journaling, talking about how I’m feeling are all things that help me stay on track along my path. Having strong friendships and family support have also been key components to maintaining my mental stability too! They help give me strength when I am feeling low - something that is invaluable during tough times.
At the end of the day, coming across a mental illness can be frightening but knowing you aren’t alone is comforting! Never feel ashamed of speaking up about your feelings and speaking with those closest to you about how you’re really doing; it’s critical for finding support on this journey!
