Mixed anxiety and depression make simple things feel impossible

Some days, basic tasks feel weirdly huge. Answering a message, taking a shower, or making something to eat can sit in my head for hours like it’s a major decision. The anxiety tells me everything could go wrong, while the depression makes me feel too drained to deal with any of it.

Then I feel guilty for struggling with things that seem so easy for everyone else. I know avoiding them usually makes me feel worse, but starting still feels almost impossible. Does anyone else get stuck in that loop where even one small task feels like too much?

The guilt after putting off a shower or a message can be almost as exhausting as the task itself. I’ve had days where I reduce things to the smallest possible step, like turning on the water or opening the message without answering it. Sometimes that’s enough to break the freeze.

It also helps me to choose one “must do” and let the rest wait, rather than treating every unfinished task like proof I’m failing. Have you found any particular small task that feels easiest to use as a starting point?

@Yesenia_Garza, opening the message without answering it is a good example. That first step often removes some of the dread, even if I still need time before replying.

For me, washing one dish or filling a glass of water is usually the easiest starting point. It gives me a small sense of movement without demanding much energy. Picking one must-do also helps keep the guilt from turning the whole day into a list of failures.
