Meds help but alcohol keeps pulling me back

My meds help keep my head steadier, but alcohol still manages to pull me back in. I can have a few decent days and start thinking I’ve got it handled, then one bad evening turns into drinking again.

The frustrating part is knowing the medication is doing its job while I’m working against it. Alcohol messes with my sleep and mood, and the next day my anxiety is usually worse. I tell myself I’ll just have one, but that plan doesn’t hold up very often.

I’m trying to focus less on beating myself up and more on what happens right before I drink. Usually I’m lonely, restless, or avoiding something. Noticing that doesn’t fix it, but it gives me a small window to do something different. Reaching out before I pour a drink might be the next thing I need to practice.

@Jasmine_Horton, that window before pouring the drink sounds like a useful place to focus, especially since you’ve already noticed loneliness and restlessness showing up first. The urge can feel much more manageable when I name what’s underneath it instead of treating it like a random failure.

I once texted someone just “rough evening, can you distract me?” before I started drinking. It didn’t solve everything, but getting through that first half hour changed the direction of the night.

That “rough evening, can you distract me?” text is actually a good idea. It takes away the pressure to explain everything, which can feel like too much when the urge is already loud.

I’ve found the first half hour can be the whole battle sometimes. Even doing something boring, like taking a shower or going out for a quick walk, can create enough space to get past the automatic part. Having one person who knows what that text means would probably make it easier to send instead of waiting until things get worse.
