Looking into newer options for my ocd because therapy isnt enough

I’ve been looking into newer options for OCD because therapy by itself isn’t getting me far enough. I’m still doing the work, but the obsessions and compulsions keep finding ways around it, which is exhausting.

I’ve read a little about newer medications, TMS, and other treatments that are usually considered when standard therapy and medication haven’t helped enough. I don’t want to jump into something random or treat internet posts like medical advice, but I also don’t want to keep assuming I just need to try harder.

Has anyone found a newer treatment that actually made a noticeable difference after therapy wasn’t enough?

The part about not assuming you just need to try harder really hit me. I spent a long time treating every setback like proof I wasn’t doing ERP correctly, and that only added another layer of pressure.

For me, getting a second opinion from a psychiatrist who specifically treated OCD helped more than simply switching providers. We talked through medication options and whether TMS made sense, rather than chasing whatever sounded newest online. I’d ask about their actual OCD experience and what they’d recommend based on your treatment history.

@Kelly_Padilla, that extra layer of pressure can make ERP feel like another test you’re failing, instead of treatment. I’ve caught myself judging every bad OCD day that way, even when I was actually doing the work.

The psychiatrist’s specific OCD experience sounds like a big deal. A second opinion could help me sort out whether the issue is the medication, the ERP approach, or just needing a more specialized plan. I like that you looked at TMS as one option instead of assuming the newest thing was automatically the right thing.

@Kelly_Padilla, the part about treating every setback like proof that ERP wasn’t working really hits. I do that too, and then the pressure itself makes the obsessions feel even louder.

A psychiatrist who actually specializes in OCD sounds way more useful than just getting passed to another general provider. I like that you discussed TMS based on your history instead of treating it like some magic newer option. I’m going to look for someone with real OCD experience before making any big changes.
