I wonder if anyone else has ever felt like they’re juggling a thousand thoughts at once, with some of them just bouncing around like hyperactive kids in a candy store? That’s kind of what it’s like for me living with tourettic obsessive-compulsive disorder. It’s a mix of tics, thoughts, and compulsions that can sometimes feel overwhelming, but I’ve been on a journey of finding calm amidst the chaos.
There are days when it feels like my brain is a radio stuck between stations—just a bunch of static and noise. The tics come out of nowhere and can be so disruptive. It can be anything from an eye blink to a sudden exclamation, and I’ve learned that embracing these quirks is a part of me. I remember a time when I’d try to suppress them, thinking that maybe if I just held it all in, it would somehow disappear. Spoiler alert: it didn’t work!
Then there’s the obsessive side. Oh boy! The thoughts that just loop endlessly can be exhausting. I found myself getting stuck on certain worries or routines, feeling like I’d never find a way out. It’s almost like being on a merry-go-round that keeps spinning, and I’m just hanging on for dear life.
But here’s the thing: I’ve started to find ways to calm that storm inside. Deep breathing exercises have become my best friend. It sounds so simple, but taking a minute to breathe in deeply and then slowly let it all out really helps ground me. Sometimes, I even visualize my thoughts like clouds in the sky, just floating by instead of getting caught up in them.
I also believe in the power of community. Sharing my experiences with friends—those who really get it—has been such a relief. It’s amazing how much lighter I feel when I talk about what I’m going through. It’s like saying, “Hey, this is my reality, and it’s okay to be messy sometimes.”
Have any of you found your own little pockets of calm? I’d love to hear what works for you or any tips you might have. It’s all about supporting each other on this rollercoaster, right?
