Living with quiet bipolar disorder

Sometimes I feel weighed down by thoughts and emotions that are out of my control. It’s hard for me to try and understand why I’m feeling this way, and it has taken me a long time to figure out what is happening.

I was recently diagnosed with quiet bipolar disorder, although my symptoms have been present for years. My moods can swing from extreme lows where there is no motivation or energy, to periods of mania where my energy levels are high and I find myself taking on new projects almost compulsively.

Although the highs can be fun in the moment, they come with their own set of problems. Periods of mania can also make me feel disconnected from the real world resulting in poor decisions, reckless behavior and risky life choices.

It’s been hard to learn how to manage my disorder because it often manifests differently than other types of mental illness which are more recognizable and easily explained. This means I have to take an active role in creating my own coping strategies as I explore how best to navigate through difficult times. Despite this extra work, I’m working hard on being mindful of how I’m feeling each day, so that when these episodes arise I have the tools necessary to understand and deal with them in a healthy manner.
