Let's chat about the sneaky addictions we see in young people

What stood out to me was how often we overlook the sneaky addictions that can creep into young people’s lives. I think back to my own experiences and how easy it was to just brush things off as “normal” behavior, when in reality, they were signs of something deeper.

For instance, the rise of social media has created a unique kind of addiction that I see in many young people around me. It’s almost like a double-edged sword – it can be a great way to connect and share, but it also has this insidious way of making us feel inadequate or anxious. I remember days when I’d scroll endlessly, comparing my life to the highlight reels of others, and it took me a while to realize how much it affected my mood.

Then there’s the whole issue of substances. A friend of mine recently opened up about how easy it was for him to fall into that trap during college. What started as occasional partying turned into a reliance on alcohol to cope with stress and social situations. Hearing his story made me reflect on how many times I’ve seen young people use substances as a crutch, thinking it’s just part of the college experience.

I’ve also noticed how gaming can turn into something more than just a hobby for some. I’ve had friends who spent hours lost in virtual worlds, and while gaming can be fun and a great way to unwind, it can also become an escape from reality. There were times when I’d find myself playing just to avoid dealing with my own issues, which in hindsight wasn’t the healthiest choice.

What’s really been on my mind is how important it is to create open conversations about these topics. It seems like there’s still a stigma around discussing addictions, especially among young people. I wonder how many are struggling silently because they feel like they’re the only ones.

How do we encourage a culture where sharing these experiences is normalized? It would be great to hear some of your thoughts or stories on this. It’s refreshing to know we’re not alone in navigating these challenges, and maybe together, we can shed light on some of these sneaky addictions we face.
