Learning to calm anxiety before it takes over my day

I’ve been trying to catch anxiety earlier, before it grabs the whole day. Once I’m already spiraling, everything feels harder, so I’m paying more attention to the first signs, tight shoulders, rushing thoughts, checking the same thing over and over.

What helps most is stopping for a few minutes instead of arguing with every thought. I put both feet on the floor, take a slower breath, and name what’s actually happening right now. Usually the situation is uncomfortable, but not the disaster my brain is predicting.

I’ve also started choosing one small task rather than making a big plan. Make coffee. Answer one message. Take a short walk. It gives my mind something real to focus on, and sometimes that’s enough to keep anxiety from running the rest of the day.

The checking the same thing over and over is one of my first signs too. I used to treat it like I needed one more check to feel certain, but it usually just made the worry louder.

Putting both feet on the floor has helped me break that loop. I name five things I can see, then do one simple task before deciding whether anything actually needs fixing. It doesn’t erase the anxiety, but it stops it from choosing my next hour for me.

The part about waiting before deciding if anything needs fixing is really useful. I tend to assume the anxious feeling means I have to act right away, even when nothing has actually changed.

I’ve been trying a similar pause with emails and texts, since I can reread them way too many times. Five things I can see, feet on the floor, then step away for a few minutes. Sometimes I still need to deal with it, but at least I’m choosing instead of reacting.
