Intermittent fasting keeps turning into binge eating for me. I’ll feel proud of myself for getting through the fasting window, then end up eating way past comfortable because I’m so hungry and focused on food.
Afterward I feel guilty and tell myself I need to fast longer, which just starts the cycle again. I think strict time limits might not work for me, even though they seem helpful for other people. Has anyone found a less restrictive way to eat without feeling out of control?

Meagan, the guilt leading straight into a longer fast sounds like the part that keeps the cycle going. I’ve found it helps to treat the next meal as a normal meal, not a punishment or a test of willpower.
Regular meals and snacks with enough protein, carbs, and fat can make food feel less urgent. I’d also consider stepping away from fasting altogether for now, especially if the episodes feel hard to control. A dietitian or therapist who understands binge eating could help without adding more restriction.
Meagan, I’ve had better luck dropping the fasting window completely and eating at fairly regular times. Waiting until I’m ravenous makes food decisions feel impossible, and then I’m eating quickly without really noticing when I’m full.
What helped was planning meals and a couple snacks that actually felt satisfying, instead of trying to make them as small as possible. If I ate more than planned, I tried to have the next meal normally rather than “make up for it.” That took some practice, but the guilt and restriction cycle got less intense.
If the out-of-control feeling keeps happening, a dietitian or therapist familiar with binge eating could be worth looking into. Strict fasting can make this worse for some people, so stepping away from it isn’t failing.

The point about planning meals that are actually satisfying really matters. I used to think a “safe” meal had to be small, then wondered why I was prowling the kitchen an hour later.
The next-meal-as-normal approach takes away a lot of drama too. One overeaten meal doesn’t need a punishment attached to it. Regular eating gave me a much steadier baseline than trying to win the day through restriction.
