I keep using food to shut everything off for a while. It works in the moment, then the guilt hits and I start hating myself for it. That usually makes me want to eat again, so it turns into this stupid cycle.
I know I need to stop treating myself like I’m the problem, but it’s hard when I feel like I have no control. Lately I’m trying to notice what I’m actually feeling before I reach for food, even if I don’t always catch it in time.

Noticing what you’re feeling before reaching for food sounds like a really useful step, even when you only catch it sometimes. I’ve found that the pause doesn’t have to stop the eating to still count. Sometimes I just realize, “I’m lonely” or “I’m overwhelmed,” and that gives me a little more choice.
The guilt seems to keep the cycle fed, so I’m trying to treat a difficult moment as information instead of proof that I’ve failed. One episode doesn’t erase the effort you made before it. Even a small bit of self-kindness afterward can make the next choice feel less impossible.

@Anna_Dean, I like what you said about the pause still counting even when it doesn’t stop the eating. I’ve had moments where simply naming “I’m overwhelmed” helped me feel less trapped in the automatic part of it.
Treating the episode as information feels much kinder than turning it into a verdict. I’m trying to ask what I needed in that moment, then do one small thing afterward that isn’t punishment, like making tea or stepping outside. It doesn’t fix everything, but it can interrupt the guilt.
