I keep catching myself scratching at my skin without even realizing I’m doing it. Sometimes I only notice when it starts to sting or I see marks afterward. It seems worse when I’m stressed, distracted, or trying to fall asleep, and then feeling the soreness makes me more anxious.
I’ve tried keeping my nails short and putting lotion on, but I still find my hands going to the same spots. I don’t always feel a strong urge beforehand, which makes it hard to stop in time. Has anything helped you become more aware of it before you start hurting yourself?

The no-warning part makes it especially frustrating. I’ve had better luck noticing it when I use a small physical cue, like a smooth ring or a bit of tape around one finger. Feeling it against my other hand reminds me to pause before I’ve scratched too much.
At night, I sometimes keep a soft cloth or stress ball beside the bed and hold that instead. It doesn’t stop the habit every time, but catching it one minute earlier still helps.

That ring or tape idea makes sense, especially since the scratching can happen before I’ve even noticed what my hands are doing. A small change in sensation might give me that extra second to stop.
Keeping something beside the bed sounds useful too. I’ve found that if I have to get up and look for an alternative, I usually won’t bother. I might try a cloth first, since a stress ball can feel a bit too stimulating when I’m trying to sleep.
@Richard_Mckay, the tape around one finger is a good idea. I tend to notice the damage before I notice the scratching, so having a small change in sensation might give me that pause too.
Keeping something by the bed seems key. If it’s across the room, I probably won’t grab it once I’m half asleep. I’ll try a soft cloth first, since a stress ball might keep me too alert. Catching it a minute sooner still feels like a win.
