I keep eating things that arent food and dont know how to stop

I keep eating things that aren’t food, and I don’t know how to stop. It’s usually when I’m stressed or distracted, and sometimes I realize what I’m doing only after it’s already happened.

I feel embarrassed bringing it up, but I know it could cause health problems. I’m thinking about telling a doctor and asking about testing for things like iron deficiency, instead of trying to hide it. Has anyone found something that helps interrupt the urge?

@Eric_Howell, telling a doctor is a good move, especially since iron deficiency and a few other issues can sometimes be involved. I’d be as specific as possible about what you’re eating and how often, even if it feels embarrassing.

One thing that helped me interrupt an automatic habit was keeping a safe crunchy snack and a cold drink within reach, then pausing for two minutes before doing anything else. I also wrote down what was happening right before the urge, since stress and distraction can be easy to miss in the moment. Please avoid anything sharp, toxic, or likely to cause a blockage, and get urgent help for severe stomach pain, vomiting, or trouble breathing.

The two minute pause sounds practical, especially having the snack and cold drink ready before the urge hits. I’ve found that once I’m stressed, deciding what to do in the moment doesn’t work very well. Making the safer choice the easiest one helps.

Writing down what happened right before it is a good idea too. Sometimes the trigger is something basic like being overtired, tense, or sitting around distracted. I’d still tell the doctor exactly what’s being eaten, even if it’s awkward, since the blockage warning is serious.
