I feel like I’m stuck in the same depressed place and I’ve run out of ideas. I’ve tried pushing myself to keep a routine, going outside, talking to people, and making small plans, but most days even basic things feel like too much. Then I feel guilty for not trying harder, which just makes everything heavier.
I’m still taking my medication and I have a therapist, but lately I don’t feel much movement. I don’t necessarily need some huge solution. I’d be happy to find one thing that makes the day feel a little less impossible. How did you figure out what to try next when the usual advice wasn’t helping?

Laura, the guilt after not managing the routine can become its own extra weight. I had to stop treating every task as a test of whether I was getting better. On the worst days, my only goal was a shower, some food, and taking my medication. That counted.
One concrete thing that helped was making a “minimum day” list on paper. It had three items only: drink something, eat anything with protein, and sit outside or by an open window for five minutes. If I did more, fine, but I wasn’t allowed to add goals later and call the day a failure.
Since you’re already working with a therapist and taking medication, it might be worth telling both of them plainly that you feel no movement, rather than waiting until your next scheduled review. Sometimes the next step is adjusting the plan, not trying harder.
Laura, the guilt can make even small tasks feel like proof that you’re failing, which isn’t fair to you. When I’ve been that drained, I’ve tried choosing one “anchor” for the day, like taking my medication with a glass of water or eating something simple. Anything beyond that is extra, not a requirement.
I’d tell your therapist and prescriber plainly that the current plan doesn’t seem to be helping enough. That isn’t giving up or failing at treatment. It’s useful information, and they may be able to adjust something instead of leaving you to push harder.
Laura, I’d take the lack of movement seriously, not as a sign that you need to push harder. I’ve had periods where doing all the “right” things still left me feeling just as low, and telling my therapist exactly that helped shift the conversation from coping tips to whether the treatment plan needed changing.
For one less-impossible moment, I’ve found it easier to choose something comforting rather than productive. A warm drink, sitting under a blanket with familiar music, or watching one short show without judging myself for it. It doesn’t fix the depression, but it can make the next hour feel less demanding.
Have you told your prescriber that the medication doesn’t seem to be helping much lately, and asked what options exist besides simply waiting longer?
