I can’t tell if my cleaning is OCD or just a bad habit. I’ll wipe the kitchen counter, then notice one small spot and feel like I have to clean the whole thing again. Sometimes I know it’s probably fine, but I still get tense until I do it. Other times I’m just putting things off and cleaning because I don’t want to deal with something else.
A few years ago, I remember spending nearly an hour scrubbing the bathroom after someone had visited, even though there wasn’t any visible mess. I felt relieved when it was done, but the worry came back later. How can you tell when cleaning has crossed from a habit into something worth discussing with a professional?

The part about feeling tense until you redo the whole counter sounds worth bringing up with a professional, especially since the relief doesn’t last. It doesn’t automatically mean OCD, but the urge, anxiety, and temporary relief can be useful details to mention.
I’ve found it helps to look at how much time it takes and whether it gets in the way of sleep, plans, or other things I need to do. Cleaning to avoid another task can happen too, but the “it has to be done again” feeling seems like a separate thing.
You could write down what triggers it, how long you clean, and what you’re afraid might happen if you stop. A therapist or doctor can sort out whether it’s OCD, anxiety, or just a habit that’s gotten stronger.
@Kimberly_Nicholson, the clue I’d pay attention to is that brief relief followed by the worry returning. I’ve had ordinary chores turn into ways of avoiding something uncomfortable, but the feeling that the cleaning must be repeated seems different from simply preferring a tidy counter.
I’d bring it up with a doctor or therapist if it’s taking a lot of time, making you late, keeping you from relaxing, or causing distress even when you know the mess isn’t really there. Writing down what you noticed, what you feared, and how long the cleaning lasted could make the pattern clearer.
Have you ever tried leaving the small spot alone for a few minutes? What happens to the tension if you wait instead of cleaning it again?
