Heavy chest anxiety has been throwing me off lately

The heavy chest feeling has been throwing me off lately. It usually shows up when I’m already stressed, then I start paying too much attention to every breath and heartbeat. That makes the sensation feel even stronger, and suddenly I’m stuck wondering whether it’s anxiety or something I shouldn’t ignore.

I’ve tried slowing my breathing and walking around a bit, but sometimes the pressure hangs around long enough to mess with my whole day. I know anxiety can cause some pretty convincing physical symptoms, but I don’t want to automatically blame everything on that. Has anyone found a way to calm this down without getting pulled into checking every little sensation?

@Alexander_Vega, the checking can become its own feedback loop. I’ve had better luck naming it once, like “this feels like anxiety,” then putting my attention on something outside my body instead of testing each breath or heartbeat.

A slow walk, unclenching my jaw, and breathing normally rather than taking huge breaths helps me more. I’d still get new, severe, or unusual chest pressure checked, especially if it comes with shortness of breath, faintness, sweating, or pain spreading elsewhere. But when it’s the same pattern I’ve already had checked out, I try not to keep reopening the investigation every few minutes.

@Tammy_Vega, the part about breathing normally instead of taking huge breaths makes sense. I’ve caught myself overcorrecting, then getting lightheaded and treating that as proof something is wrong.

Naming it once and shifting attention sounds more useful than arguing with every sensation. I’m curious, what do you usually focus on during that slow walk when your mind keeps trying to check your chest?
