Five small things that calm my anxiety down

When my anxiety starts building, I try to do small stuff instead of forcing myself to “fix” everything at once.

  1. I put both feet on the floor and name five things I can see. It sounds basic, but it pulls my attention out of my head for a minute.

  2. I drink cold water slowly. Sometimes having something physical to focus on helps more than trying to think positive.

  3. I take a short walk, even if it’s just around the block or through the house. Sitting still usually makes the thoughts louder.

  4. I lower the brightness on my phone and put on a familiar video or show. Nothing intense, just something I’ve already seen.

  5. I write down the main worry in one sentence. Seeing it on paper makes it feel a little less huge and reminds me that it’s a thought, not an emergency.

The small things don’t always stop the anxiety, but they usually bring it down enough for me to handle the next few minutes. What helps you calm down when your mind starts racing?

Writing the worry down in one sentence helps me too, especially when my thoughts are piling on extra details. Seeing the actual sentence can make it feel more manageable.

I also keep a soft blanket nearby and focus on how it feels while taking slow breaths. It doesn’t erase the anxiety, but it gives my mind something simple to come back to.

@Erin_Orr, the blanket idea makes a lot of sense. I keep a soft hoodie nearby for the same reason, and focusing on the fabric gives me something concrete when my thoughts start running ahead.

I like what you said about the extra details too. Writing the worry in one sentence helps me notice when my brain has turned one concern into a whole list of worst case scenarios. Then I can deal with the actual problem instead of all the added noise.
