Finding the right therapist for my anxiety struggles

I’m curious about how everyone finds their therapist, especially when it comes to dealing with anxiety. It’s been quite the journey for me, and I thought I’d share a bit of my experience, hoping it might resonate with some of you.

When I first started looking for a therapist, I felt a mix of hope and anxiety—ironic, right? I remember scrolling through endless lists, reading bios, and trying to figure out who might actually get what I was going through. I had this idea that I needed someone who specialized in anxiety, but I was also looking for that connection and understanding, you know?

There’s something so personal about sharing your struggles, and I realized that chemistry matters just as much as qualifications. After a few initial consultations, I found that some therapists just didn’t click with me. It was almost like dating; you go in with high hopes, but sometimes the vibe just isn’t right. That’s okay! It’s part of the process.

One therapist I tried was really nice, but I felt like our sessions were more like interviews than a conversation. I walked away feeling more anxious, wondering if I was asking the right questions or sharing enough. It made me question what I wanted from therapy. Was it just a sounding board I was after, or did I actually need someone to challenge my thoughts?

Eventually, I found someone who really listened—like, truly listened. She didn’t rush me and actually took the time to explore my experiences with anxiety. It felt like a safe space where I could be honest without judgment. That’s when I knew I was on the right track.

I’m curious, what qualities do you think are most important in a therapist? Is it their approach, their background, or just that gut feeling when you talk to them? I’d love to hear about your experiences and what you’ve found works for you. Sometimes it feels like a bit of a maze trying to find the right person, but it’s so worth it when you do!
