Finding balance with manic depressive disorder

What really stood out to me was how elusive balance can feel when you’re living with manic depressive disorder. I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs, and it’s such a wild ride—one moment, I’m soaring high, feeling like I can take on the world, and the next, I’m deep in a fog that feels almost impossible to penetrate.

I remember a time when I was riding a wave of energy, staying up late, writing, painting, and dancing around my kitchen. It was exhilarating! But then, without warning, that energy would crash, leaving me in a pit of despair. It’s like being on a rollercoaster where you never quite know when the next drop is coming. Have any of you felt that unpredictability?

Finding balance has been more of a journey than a destination. For me, it has meant recognizing the signs that precede both the highs and lows. I’ve learned to put some practices in place that help me stabilize those swings a bit. Simple things like keeping a regular sleep schedule and engaging in mindfulness exercises really help ground me. But there’s always that question: what works for one person might not work for another. I’m curious about what strategies you all have found helpful.

I’ve also had to confront the stigma that sometimes comes with this disorder. It can be tough to discuss it openly, especially when those around you might not fully understand what it feels like. Have you ever experienced that? It always makes me think about how important it is to foster conversations around mental health—what if we all shared our stories a little more?

I think balance is a constantly shifting target, and that’s okay. Some days, it feels like I’m managing things well, and other days, it feels chaotic. But I hold onto the hope that by sharing our experiences, we can create a sense of community and understanding. So, I’d love to hear your thoughts! How do you all find your balance? What has been your biggest challenge or your greatest success in managing your own mental health journey?
