Finding balance in codependency and mental health

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about codependency and how it can really mess with your mental health. I wonder if anyone else has felt like they’re walking a tightrope, trying to balance caring for someone else while also taking care of themselves. It’s a tricky situation, right?

I used to think that being there for someone meant putting their needs before mine, like that was some sort of badge of honor. But I’ve learned the hard way that when you’re too wrapped up in someone else’s struggles, you start to lose sight of your own. There was a time when I felt like I was living for someone else, and honestly, it led to some pretty dark days for me.

When I finally started to recognize those patterns, it was like a light bulb went off. I realized that I could support my friends and family without losing myself in the process. It’s all about finding that balance, right? I mean, how do you even start to untangle those feelings? It felt overwhelming at first, but I began setting little boundaries—nothing drastic, just small steps like saying no sometimes or taking time for my hobbies.

Honestly, opening up in therapy helped a lot too. I’d sit there and share my experiences, and it was such a relief to hear that I wasn’t alone in this struggle. The therapist helped me see that it’s okay to prioritize my own mental health without feeling guilty. It’s not selfish; it’s necessary.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, if you’re feeling that weight of codependency, know that it’s a journey. It might feel confusing at times, but you can absolutely learn to care for yourself while supporting others. It’s like that saying about putting your oxygen mask on first before helping someone else. I wonder if any of you have struggled with this too? What’s helped you find that balance? Would love to hear your thoughts.
