Feeling very depressed and not sure how to pull myself out

I’ve been very depressed lately and can’t seem to get any traction. Even basic things like showering, making food, or answering a message feel like more effort than I have. I keep telling myself to do one small thing, but then I end up sitting there feeling guilty for not doing it.

A few years ago, I had a bad spell and started going outside every morning, even if I only stood by the door for five minutes. It didn’t fix everything, but having that one routine gave the day a little shape. I’m having trouble finding anything like that now.

What has helped you take the first small step when you feel completely stuck?

The five minutes by the door sounds like a good reminder that the routine didn’t have to fix everything to still help. When I’m completely stuck, I make the goal almost embarrassingly small, like putting my feet on the floor and drinking some water. Sometimes that’s all I can manage.

I’ve also found it easier to choose something with a clear ending, such as standing outside until a song finishes. It takes away the pressure to have a productive day.
