Feeling low lately without knowing why
This caught my attention since I’ve been feeling unusually low lately, even though I can’t point to one specific reason. Nothing dramatic has happened, and from the outside my life probably looks fairly normal, but I’ve been carrying this heaviness that’s difficult to explain.
Some days I wake up already tired of everything. Small tasks feel harder than they should, and things I usually enjoy don’t seem to reach me in the same way. I’ve caught myself withdrawing from people because I don’t know how to answer “What’s wrong?” when I honestly don’t know.
The uncertainty is almost as frustrating as the mood itself. I keep wondering whether I’m overlooking something obvious—poor sleep, built-up stress, changes in routine, or feelings I’ve been pushing aside. At the same time, I’m trying not to dismiss it just because I can’t identify a clear cause.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of unexplained low mood? What helped you start understanding what was behind it, or simply get through that period?

This resonates with me because I’m 18 too, and I’ve had stretches where nothing was obviously “wrong,” but I still felt flat and exhausted. It was confusing because I almost felt like I needed a good enough reason to be struggling. Eventually I realized that stress, poor sleep, isolation, and emotions I’d been ignoring could pile up quietly, even without one major event.
I found it helped to stop trying to solve everything at once. I started paying attention to basic patterns—when I slept, whether I’d eaten properly, how much I was getting outside, and whether I’d spoken to anyone honestly. Even a short walk or sending one message didn’t fix my mood, but it made the days feel slightly less closed in. I also tried telling someone, “I don’t really know what’s wrong, but I haven’t been feeling like myself.” That was easier than trying to explain the whole thing.
You don’t have to identify a clear cause for your feelings to deserve attention. If this continues, gets worse, or starts affecting your ability to function, talking with a doctor or counselor could be worthwhile. And if you ever feel unsafe or think about hurting yourself, please tell someone immediately or contact emergency/crisis support. For now, has anything changed recently in your sleep, routine, relationships, or energy—even something that seems too minor to count?

The part about feeling like you need a “good enough reason” really hit me. I’ve done that too, and it usually just adds guilt on top of the low mood.
One thing that helped me was keeping a very basic note on my phone for a week: sleep, meals, time outside, and mood from 1 to 10. Nothing detailed. A pattern showed up pretty quickly, especially how much worse I felt after several nights of poor sleep and barely seeing anyone.
I like the wording you used about not feeling like yourself. It’s simple enough to actually say out loud, without having to explain everything first.
