Excessive yawning and anxiety what's the deal with that

I found this really interesting because I’ve noticed that my tendency to yawn seems to spike when I’m feeling particularly anxious. It’s like my body has this weird way of responding to stress; when I’m in a tense situation or my mind is racing, I can’t stop yawning. It might seem odd, but it got me thinking about the connection between excessive yawning and anxiety.

The first time I really noticed it was during a presentation at work. I was already feeling nervous, and then, out of nowhere, I started yawning like crazy. I was worried people would think I was bored or disinterested, but in reality, I was trying to manage my anxiety. It’s almost like my body’s way of saying, “Hey, you’re wound up! Let’s try to relax a little.”

I started to do a bit of digging and discovered that yawning can actually be a physiological response to anxiety. It seems that when we’re stressed, our bodies might crave more oxygen, and yawning is one way to increase that intake. It’s fascinating, really, how our bodies have these built-in mechanisms, even if they can be a bit awkward in social situations!

That said, I wonder how others handle this. Have you ever found yourself yawning excessively during stressful moments? It can feel sort of embarrassing, but I’ve come to see it as just another quirk of how anxiety manifests for me. I’ve even considered it a signal - a reminder to take a deep breath and refocus.

What I find most interesting is the variety of responses we all have to anxiety. Some people might feel a tightening in their chest, while others might experience racing thoughts or, like me, find themselves yawning uncontrollably. It really highlights how unique our experiences can be.

I’m curious to hear if anyone else has experienced this. Do you find that yawning is a part of your stress response? How do you cope with it? Let’s chat about it!
