Eating disorder making me scared of food again

Food has started feeling scary again, and I hate how quickly that fear came back. I can stand in the kitchen hungry, looking at something I used to enjoy, then suddenly my brain starts counting, judging, and warning me not to eat it. Last week I ended up having tea instead of dinner, even though I knew I was hungry, and afterward I felt both relieved and awful.

I thought I was past this part. Now I’m trying to eat something small without turning it into a test or punishment, but it feels harder than I expected. How do you handle the fear when it comes back so suddenly?

Vanessa, the part about standing hungry in the kitchen really struck me. I’ve had moments where the warning thoughts got so loud that skipping the meal felt like the easier choice, even though I knew I’d feel worse afterward.

One thing that helped me was taking the decision out of the moment. I kept a short list of simple, familiar foods and chose one before I got too hungry. I’d put a modest portion on a plate, sit somewhere away from the kitchen, and focus only on eating it, not judging whether I had done it perfectly.

Tea instead of dinner sounds like a sign you were struggling, not failing. If this is happening again, please tell your treatment provider or doctor, especially if meals are being skipped.

The short list of familiar foods is a practical idea. When my thoughts get loud around meals, having to choose from every possible option can make things worse. A few low-pressure choices written down ahead of time might help me avoid negotiating with myself while I’m already hungry.

I also like what you said about not judging whether the meal was done perfectly. I’ve caught myself treating one difficult meal like proof that I’m failing, which only makes the next one harder.
