Depression makes me pull away from people i care about

Depression makes me pull away from the people I care about most, which feels backwards because those are usually the people I need around me. I stop replying, cancel plans, and convince myself they’re better off not dealing with my mood. Then I feel guilty for disappearing, so I withdraw even more.

The worst part is that I’m not always asking for advice or someone to fix anything. Sometimes I just don’t have the energy to explain what’s going on. A simple message or sitting together without much talking would probably help, but reaching out can feel like too much.

I’m trying to be more honest instead of vanishing. Even saying, “I’m having a bad day and might be quiet, but I’m not ignoring you,” feels like a small step. Do other people find it easier to stay connected when they explain that they’re struggling, or does that feel impossible too?

Michael, that message about being quiet without ignoring someone is a good middle ground. It doesn’t require explaining everything, but it gives the other person a way to understand the silence.

I once sent a friend, “Not up for talking today, but a check-in would be okay.” He just replied with a thumbs-up and left it there. That small exchange made staying connected feel much less demanding.

That “check-in would be okay” wording is useful. I tend to think I have to be ready for a full conversation before I contact anyone, which usually means I contact nobody.

What helped me was sending a single agreed-upon word, like “rough,” to one trusted person. They knew it meant I didn’t want questions or advice, just a short message later. It took the pressure off both of us and made it easier to stay connected.

@Michael_Howard, I like that the thumbs-up didn’t turn into a bunch of questions. Sometimes knowing the other person understood is enough, and anything more can feel like another task.

I’ve used a similar message when I didn’t have the energy to talk, but still didn’t want to disappear completely. It helped to be specific about what I could handle, like a funny video or a simple “thinking of you” text. Did your friend already know to leave it there, or did you have to explain that beforehand?
