Depression is pushing my relationship away
I can feel myself shutting down, and then getting frustrated when my partner doesn’t know how to reach me. I cancel plans, reply with one-word texts, and sometimes act like I don’t care even though I care a lot. The worst part is that I know it hurts them, but knowing that doesn’t magically give me the energy to act different.
I’ve tried explaining that it isn’t their fault, but I think hearing that over and over isn’t enough anymore. They’re starting to feel rejected, and I’m scared they’ll eventually stop trying. I don’t want them to become my therapist, but I also don’t know how to let them in without dumping everything on them.
I’m thinking about finding a therapist and being more honest about what’s happening before there’s too much damage. Has anyone found a way to stay connected during a really bad depressive spell?

The one-word texts and canceling plans can happen almost automatically when depression gets bad. I’ve found it helps to agree on a simple message ahead of time, like “I’m low today, I care about you, but I don’t have much capacity.” That gives the other person something real to hold onto without needing a huge explanation.
A tiny bit of contact can count too. Sitting together quietly, sending a heart-free but honest check-in, or having a short phone call instead of making plans for a whole evening. Therapy sounds like a good step, especially since it takes some pressure off your partner and gives you somewhere to unpack the heavier stuff.

That “I care about you, but I don’t have much capacity” message seems useful because it separates low energy from lack of love. A short message like that could prevent a partner from filling in the silence with the worst explanation.
I like the idea of making contact smaller too. Sitting in the same room without having to talk can feel much more manageable than committing to an entire evening out. Did you find it helped to agree on the wording during a calmer period, before depression made communication harder?
