Depression has made eating feel impossible lately

Depression has made eating feel impossible lately. I know I need food, but even deciding what to make feels like too much effort. Some days I realize I’ve gone most of the day with only coffee or a few bites of something.

I’m trying to keep easy stuff around, like yogurt, bananas, soup, and protein drinks, since cooking feels out of reach. It still feels frustrating because I’m not necessarily trying to avoid eating. I just don’t feel hungry, and everything seems like another task.

I’m worried this is making the depression and lack of energy worse, but I’m having trouble breaking the cycle. Has anything simple helped you eat when depression takes away your appetite?

Keeping food that needs almost no preparation has helped me too, especially yogurt drinks, toast, and granola bars. I’ve had days where even choosing between two options felt like too much, so I just picked the easiest thing and ate a little.

One small trick was putting something beside my bed or desk before I got completely drained. A few bites still felt better than waiting until I was shaky. If this keeps happening, it may be worth mentioning to a doctor, since barely eating can make the low energy spiral worse.

The “deciding what to make” part can be exhausting all by itself. I’ve had better luck setting up a small no-choice menu for the day, such as a drinkable breakfast, soup or a sandwich, then yogurt or a banana later. I don’t negotiate with myself about it. I just take the next item.

One concrete thing that helped was keeping crackers and peanut butter on the table where I usually sit. A few crackers with peanut butter was manageable even when a full meal felt impossible. It also gave me something besides coffee first thing. If you’re going most of the day barely eating, I’d mention it to your doctor, especially if you’re feeling shaky or losing weight.
