Dealing with the weight of severe stress and what helps me cope

I’ve been reflecting a lot lately on the weight of severe psychological stress and how it can feel almost like a heavy backpack that you just can’t take off. There have been moments when it felt like the world was piling on, and I was struggling to keep my head above water. It’s tough to admit how overwhelming life can get sometimes, especially when it feels like everyone else is managing just fine.

What I’ve found really helps me cope is just talking about it. Whether it’s with close friends who get it or even a family member who’s willing to listen, being able to share my thoughts can lift some of that pressure. It’s surprising how just saying things out loud, even the most chaotic thoughts, can make them feel a little less daunting. Have you ever noticed that? Sometimes just verbalizing what’s on my mind can clear away some of the fog.

I also discovered that getting outside, even for a short walk, does wonders for my mental state. There’s something about being in nature—the fresh air, the sounds, the sunlight (when it’s available)—that has this calming effect and helps put things into perspective. It’s like a reset button for my brain. I try to leave my phone behind too; it’s amazing how quieting that constant stream of notifications can allow me to focus on the moment instead of getting lost online.

Another thing that’s helped is finding a hobby that really engages me. For a while, I was trying to do too much, but now I’ve zeroed in on a couple of activities that bring me joy and distract me from the stress. Whether it’s sketching, playing music, or even just reading a good book, it feels like I’m giving myself permission to take a break from all the heaviness.

One of the toughest challenges I face is learning to be okay with not having everything figured out. It’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling like I should have all the answers, especially when life gets chaotic. But I’m slowly understanding that it’s okay to be a work in progress. I mean, who really has it all together, right?

I’d love to hear how others cope with severe stress. Do you have any go-to strategies or activities that help you breathe a little easier?
