Dealing with mental health - my story

I’ve been dealing with mental health issues for most of my life. At first, it seemed like the usual things – bouts of sadness, a constant feeling of emptiness, anxiety from time to time – but as I got older, the intensity and frequency of these feelings made it impossible to ignore.

For years I was in denial about my condition. I convinced myself that everything was okay because I didn’t want to face what I was feeling and honestly, out of fear of what admitting it all would mean. It took me hitting a low point before I realized how much I needed to do something about it; take steps towards getting better.

I started seeing a therapist and eventually began taking medication for depression and anxiety. Making that commitment to treatment has been one of the biggest decisions of my life and it has slowly made a difference in how I feel each day. Although there will always be bad days – sometimes really bad ones – having an understanding of how my mental health works helps me adjust my expectations and emotions so they don’t become overwhelming.

Everyone’s struggles with mental health look different– there is no one-size-fits-all solution or easy fix! It takes courage and determination to keep going when things get tough but it doesn’t have to be done alone - reaching out for support is essential if you want to move forward in the right direction. There are people out there who understand what you are going through and can help make your journey easier and more manageable than facing it on your own!
