Common addictions in youth and what i’ve seen

I wonder if anyone else has noticed how common certain addictions seem to be among young people these days. It’s kind of fascinating, yet concerning, when I think about the things I’ve seen and heard over the years.

Growing up, we all faced some pressures, right? But in today’s world, it feels like the stakes have changed. I’ve noticed that social media can really pull young people in—scrolling endlessly, comparing themselves to others, and sometimes getting sucked into a cycle of not feeling good enough. I remember hearing a friend’s younger sibling talk about how much time she spends on TikTok, and it made me think about how these platforms can become a sort of addiction, almost like a digital escape. I wonder if that’s something you all have seen in your circles too?

Then there’s substance use. I’ve had a few friends who struggled with alcohol and drugs during their teenage years, and it really impacted their lives. It’s heartbreaking to watch someone you care about go down that path. I think it often starts as a way to fit in or cope with the overwhelming emotions that can arise during adolescence. Do you think there’s enough open conversation about this?

And what about gaming? I’ve heard stories about kids spending so much time in front of screens that it affects their friendships and responsibilities. It’s like they’re in their own little world. I get the appeal—who wouldn’t want to escape into a fantastical realm for a while? But it makes me wonder where we draw the line between a fun hobby and an addiction.

I guess what strikes me most is how vital it is for us as a community to talk about these issues. When I’ve had conversations with younger folks, I’ve tried to approach it with curiosity rather than judgment. It can be so helpful to know they’re not alone in their feelings or experiences. How do you all find ways to encourage these discussions, especially around sensitive topics like addiction? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
