I’ve been looking into addiction help in Austin, and I keep running into the same concern: getting sober won’t be enough if my anxiety and depression stay untreated.
I’ve tried to handle things separately before, and that hasn’t worked very well. When my mental health gets worse, the urge to use gets stronger. Then using makes me feel more ashamed, isolated, and out of control. It turns into a pretty exhausting loop.
I’m looking for a program or therapist that understands both sides instead of treating addiction like it exists on its own. I’d rather be honest about the whole mess from the beginning than get placed somewhere that only focuses on stopping the substance.
Has anyone found Austin resources that actually offer integrated addiction and mental health care?

Kelly, the part about being honest from the beginning makes a lot of sense. I’ve had better conversations with providers when I said plainly that anxiety, depression, and using were all connected, instead of trying to present them as separate problems.
When you call places, I’d ask directly whether they do co-occurring treatment and whether the same team handles both substance use and mental health. It may also help to ask how they respond if depression or anxiety gets worse after stopping, since that can be a rough adjustment.
I’d be cautious with any program that only talks about sobriety and brushes off the rest. You deserve care that looks at the whole situation, not just one symptom.

@Taylor_Wise, asking how they handle worsening depression or anxiety after stopping is a really useful suggestion. I probably wouldn’t have thought to ask that directly, but it could reveal whether they have an actual plan for the harder days.
I also like your point about the same team handling both issues. Having to explain everything over and over to separate providers sounds exhausting, especially when the substance use and mental health symptoms affect each other so closely.
