Anxiety symptoms and the little things that catch me off guard

You know, it’s funny how anxiety can sneak up on you. One minute, I’m sipping my morning coffee, enjoying the quiet, and the next, my heart starts racing for no apparent reason. It’s those little things that catch me off guard—like when I’m getting ready to head out, and suddenly the thought of being in a crowded space feels overwhelming. I find myself checking my purse multiple times, making sure I have everything I might need, even if I’m just going to the grocery store.

Sometimes, it’s the smallest triggers that send my mind into overdrive. Like, the other day, I was in the middle of a conversation with a friend, and I noticed my palms getting sweaty. Just a casual chat, but somehow, I felt this pressure to say something profound, or worse, to not say anything at all. Those moments can make me feel incredibly self-conscious, as if everyone is watching and waiting for me to trip up.

And then there are those evenings when I settle down to watch my favorite show, but my mind races with a million thoughts. “Did I send that email?” or “What if I forget to pick up the dry cleaning?” Sometimes, I wonder if I create anxiety in my life by overthinking every little detail. I mean, who hasn’t replayed a conversation in their head a dozen times, analyzing every word? It’s exhausting!

What I’ve learned is that acknowledging these feelings is vital. When I catch myself spiraling, I try to take a step back and breathe. I remind myself that it’s okay to feel anxious and that it’s a part of my experience. Talking about it with friends—like I’m doing now—has really helped, too. It’s comforting to know that I’m not alone in this.

How do you all handle those moments when anxiety hits unexpectedly? Do you have any little tricks that help you regain your calm? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
