Anxiety and stress feel so similar sometimes don't they

You know, I’ve been reflecting on how similar anxiety and stress can feel sometimes. It’s like they sneak up on you and wrap you in this tight embrace that’s hard to shake off. I mean, there are days when I can’t even tell which one I’m dealing with. Is it stress from work? Or is it that underlying anxiety that’s been simmering away?

I remember this one particularly overwhelming week not too long ago. Everything felt heightened—my heart raced, my mind was cloudy, and I was just… on edge. At first, I chalked it up to my workload piling up and deadlines looming. But then it hit me: this sensation was more than just stress. It was like anxiety was playing a little game of tag with my stress, and I was just caught in the middle.

It made me wonder how often we confuse the two. Stress often feels like it has a tangible source—like that big presentation or family drama. But anxiety? That can feel like a shadow in the background, creeping in even when there’s no obvious reason. Both lead to that familiar knot in your stomach, the racing thoughts, and the incessant worry.

What I’ve found helpful is taking a moment to check in with myself. I try to ask, “What’s really going on here?” Is there a specific event causing this, or is it more of an internal struggle? It’s not always easy, but it can be really enlightening.

I’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you find it tough to distinguish between stress and anxiety? What do you do when those feelings hit you hard? It always helps to know we’re not alone in this!
