Sharing My Thoughts on OCD and Food Struggles

This reminds me of a time when I found myself obsessively planning meals, and honestly, it felt like I was caught in a never-ending loop. Food, which is something that should bring joy and nourishment, became this intricate puzzle that I felt I had to solve perfectly. I remember standing in the grocery aisle, staring at all the options, and feeling overwhelmed by the need to pick the “right” ingredients. It was exhausting!

Having OCD can really complicate something as fundamental as eating. For me, it often meant that I would become fixated on certain foods, worrying about contamination or the need for everything to be in its “proper” place. There was a time when I couldn’t enjoy a meal with friends without feeling the tug of my compulsions. I often wondered, “Why can’t I just eat and enjoy it like everyone else?”

Some days, it still gets the best of me, but I’m learning to navigate those thoughts. I’ve found that trying to approach it with a sense of curiosity instead of fear has helped a lot. For example, I’ll remind myself that it’s okay if I don’t have the perfect meal plan or even if I decide to indulge in something I usually wouldn’t. It’s a work in progress, but celebrating the small victories—like sharing a dessert with a friend—makes a huge difference.

I’ve also started to open up about these struggles with others, and it’s been amazing to see how many people relate in some way. It’s comforting to know that I’m not alone in this, and hearing their stories has given me perspective. Have any of you had similar experiences? How do you cope when food becomes overwhelming? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
