Thinking about death and how it affects me

What stood out to me was how often I find myself caught in these compulsive thoughts about death. It’s like an uninvited guest that shows up at the most random times. One moment, I’m having a good day, and the next, I’m spiraling down this rabbit hole of “what ifs.” I think about how fragile life is, the unpredictability of it all, and it can get pretty overwhelming.

I’ve read that a lot of people experience these kinds of thoughts, but it still feels isolating at times, you know? It’s like, why can’t I just enjoy a moment without this looming shadow in the back of my mind? I remember once I was at a friend’s birthday party, and while everyone was laughing and enjoying themselves, I started to think about how fleeting these moments are. It snapped me out of the fun, and I felt guilty for not being fully present.

Talking about it helps sometimes. I guess I never really thought about how discussing these feelings openly could lighten the load. I had a conversation with a close friend not too long ago, and it was surprising to hear that he also grapples with similar thoughts. It felt comforting, in a weird way, to know I wasn’t alone in this. It also made me realize how important it is to create a safe space where we can share these feelings without judgment.

I’ve learned to cope in various ways, like finding distractions that don’t just numb but also uplift me—like getting lost in a good book or diving into a new hobby. It’s not always easy, and some days are definitely tougher than others. But when those thoughts creep in, I try to remind myself that they don’t define me.

How do you all navigate those moments? Have you found anything that helps when those thoughts start to take over? I’d love to hear your experiences.
