I used to think stress was mostly a mental thing, but lately my body has been keeping score. During a rough stretch last year, I started getting tight shoulders, headaches, poor sleep, and an upset stomach. I kept treating each symptom separately until I noticed they got worse on days when I was worried or rushing around.

One weekend I finally slowed down, took a long walk, and stayed away from my phone for a few hours. The headache eased up, which surprised me. I still get flare-ups, especially when I ignore stress for too long, so I’m trying to take breaks before I reach that point.

Has anyone else had stress show up through physical symptoms they didn’t expect?

The upset stomach is the one that caught me off guard. I used to assume it was something I ate, but it often showed up after a string of rushed, tense days. Once I started noticing the timing, it became harder to ignore the stress connection.

That phone-free walk sounds like a useful reset. I’ve found that waiting until I’m already worn down makes it much harder to recover, so shorter breaks earlier in the day seem to work better. Do your headaches ease more from movement, quiet time, or getting some sleep?

@Luis_Hall, the tight shoulders are what I notice first when stress is building. I’ll catch myself hunching over my desk and clenching my jaw without realizing it.

A short walk helps me more than I expect, especially if I leave my phone behind. One time I took ten minutes outside before dinner instead of pushing through, and the headache I’d had all afternoon eased up.

The upset stomach has been the biggest surprise for me too. I used to blame food or something random, but after a few tense days it would show up pretty reliably. Once I noticed the pattern, I started taking the warning signs more seriously.

The phone-free walk sounds like a good reset. For me, even ten minutes outside can help, especially if I stop trying to solve everything in my head. Waiting until I’m completely wound up usually makes the headaches and bad sleep much harder to shake.
