Some signs of severe ptsd i've seen and felt

This subject has been on my mind a lot recently. It’s tough to talk about, but I think sharing some signs of severe PTSD I’ve experienced or noticed in myself could really open the door for conversation.

For a while, I didn’t even realize what I was going through. I thought I was just dealing with stress or a phase that would pass, but things started to shift. I remember feeling this overwhelming sense of dread that would wash over me, seemingly out of nowhere. It was like my body had a mind of its own, triggering a fight-or-flight response even in safe situations. Anyone else ever felt that? It’s unsettling, to say the least.

Another thing I’ve noticed is the way certain memories can come rushing back, often accompanied by intense emotions. It’s like a movie reel that starts playing at the worst times, pulling me back to moments I desperately want to forget. Sometimes it even feels like I’m living those moments all over again. It’s exhausting. I’ve had to learn to ground myself in those moments and remind myself that I’m safe right now, but it doesn’t always work.

Sleep has become a complicated relationship. There are nights when I find myself wide awake, my mind racing with thoughts or flashes of past events. Other times, I’ll wake up feeling like I’ve run a marathon, drenched in sweat as if I was running from something again. It’s a bizarre cycle—wanting to rest yet being so restless.

Then there’s the emotional shutdown. I’ve found myself pulling away from friends and family, feeling like I’m in a glass box while life happens outside. It’s like I’m stuck in my own head, and while I want to connect, there’s this invisible barrier. Have any of you experienced that kind of isolation?

Yet, through all of this, I also find moments of clarity. I’ve started to embrace therapy, and it’s been a game changer. It’s painful to dig deep, but at the same time, there’s a sense of relief in sharing these burdens with someone who listens.

I’m curious to hear if anyone else has navigated similar signs or experiences. What has helped you? How do you keep moving forward? It’s so important to talk about this stuff, and I’m glad we have a space to share and support one another.
