Reflecting on world eating disorder day 2021 and my path to healing

Reflecting on World Eating Disorder Day 2021 has me feeling a mix of gratitude and nostalgia. It’s incredible how much has changed since my own journey began. I remember when I first realized that my relationship with food wasn’t quite right; it was like a light bulb moment that was both terrifying and liberating at the same time.

I spent so much time trapped in my own head, grappling with feelings of guilt and shame around eating. It’s funny how much power we can give to food and numbers on a scale. During that time, I wouldn’t have believed anyone who said I could unlearn those patterns and find a healthier way to nourish myself. But here I am, feeling a sense of peace that I never thought I’d reach.

The path to healing is anything but linear, right? There were days when I felt like I was taking three steps forward and then two steps back. That ebb and flow – it’s so normal, yet it can feel so isolating. I think what helped me the most was finding communities where I could share my struggles and hear others’ stories. It’s such a relief to know you’re not alone in this, and that everyone’s experiences are valid.

One thing I’ve learned is the importance of compassion—inwardly and outwardly. It took me a while to be gentle with myself and recognize that healing isn’t just about the food we eat. It encompasses our mental and emotional states, too. I’ve started to appreciate my body for all it does rather than focusing on how it looks. That shift in perspective? Game changer.

I’m still a work in progress, and I think that’s okay. It helps to remind myself that every small step counts, whether it’s choosing to eat something that makes me feel good or just allowing myself a moment of self-love.

I’d love to hear from anyone else reflecting on their journeys. What has your path looked like? What insights have you gained along the way? Let’s keep the conversation going; it feels good to connect.
