I’ve noticed my PTSD gets louder when I keep pretending I’m fine. I can get through work, answer people normally, even joke around, but that doesn’t mean I’m actually okay. A lot of the time I’m just holding everything in until I’m alone, then the tension, memories, and irritability come rushing back.

For a while I thought admitting I was struggling would make things worse. It turns out the pretending was exhausting me. Even saying, “I’m having a rough day,” takes some pressure off. I don’t need to explain every detail or make it dramatic. I just need to stop acting like nothing is happening.

The hard part is noticing it before I’m completely overwhelmed. Sometimes I still catch myself automatically saying I’m fine, even when my body is clearly telling me otherwise. Being honest with myself has helped more than trying to look normal all the time.

That part about automatically saying you’re fine really hits home. I do that before I’ve even checked in with myself, then later realize I’ve been tense for hours and barely breathing properly.

Lately I’ve been trying to use a more honest but simple answer, like “I’m getting through today, but I’m not at my best.” It feels less exposing than explaining everything, and it stops me from adding another layer of pretending. Sometimes just noticing the tension early gives me a chance to step away before I’m completely flooded.

@Joyce_Nelson, barely breathing properly is one of the first signs I miss too. I can be carrying on with whatever needs doing while my body is already braced for something.

That wording, “I’m getting through today,” feels useful because it’s honest without opening the door to a long explanation. I’ve started pairing it with a small reset, like unclenching my jaw, taking a few slower breaths, or stepping outside for a minute. Catching it early doesn’t always stop the flood, but it gives me a little more choice.

@Mark_Cole, the part about joking around while still feeling overwhelmed really landed with me. I can seem completely present in a conversation, then realize afterward that I was clenching my jaw and barely taking in what anyone said.

I’ve found it helps to have one neutral phrase ready, like “I’m managing, but I need a quiet minute.” It gives me a way to be honest without having to explain the whole story. Do you notice any particular body signal that tells you the pretending is starting to wear you down?
