It’s fascinating how something as simple as picking up the phone can trigger a wave of anxiety. I never really understood it until I found myself sitting there, staring at the screen, feeling my heart race at the thought of making a call. It’s like there’s this invisible barrier between me and the person on the other end.
I remember a time when I was really struggling with this. I had to call a doctor’s office to schedule an appointment, and it took me a solid 20 minutes just to muster the courage to dial the number. I kept imagining all the things that could go wrong: what if I stuttered? What if they asked me a question I didn’t know how to answer? The “what ifs” just spiraled out of control.
But then I started to think, what if I flipped the script? Instead of letting my anxiety dictate the conversation, what if I approached it like a chance to connect, even if just for a moment? I began practicing little things, like saying phrases out loud before calling—almost like I was rehearsing for a play, but without the spotlight. It felt silly at first, but it really helped me find my voice.
And you know what? It’s been a journey. Gradually, I started to feel a bit more at ease. Now, I still get those jitters sometimes, but I remind myself that everyone on the other end is just a person, too. They’re not judging me; they’re just doing their job. I think that realization has been key for me.
Have any of you experienced something similar? How do you handle that phone anxiety? I’d love to hear your tips or stories! It feels good to know I’m not alone in this little battle.
