My mental health story: ocd and ptsd

I have had some serious struggles with mental health throughout my life. Two of the major issues I’ve faced are Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It can be very difficult to cope with both of these conditions at the same time.

For many years, I struggled with OCD without realizing there was something wrong. All my thoughts seemed to get stuck in a loop, no matter how hard I tried to break them free. I would relive traumatic experiences over and over again leading to heightened anxiety and distress. Eventually, even my day-to-day tasks became difficult since the intrusive thoughts kept popping up in my head out of nowhere.

It wasn’t until recently that I realized this was more than just worrying or feeling down every once in awhile - it was OCD affecting my everyday functioning. With help from a mental health professional, I began working on my coping skills and establishing healthy boundaries for myself so that I could better manage my symptoms.

When it came to PTSD, it took me years to acknowledge this as an issue since many of the symptoms can easily be dismissed or overlooked by those unfamiliar with trauma disorders. Working through past traumas has helped me develop better coping strategies for when flashbacks become overwhelming. The tools and knowledge gained from therapy have been extremely helpful and empowering as I’ve made significant progress in understanding these issues better and taking control of them instead of being controlled by them.

It’s never easy dealing with mental illnesses but knowing that you’re not alone makes things just a little bit easier. Talking about our struggles is important because it helps us realize how common these issues can be, encourages us to reach out for support, and makes us more resilient overall. Mental health should always be taken seriously - don’t forget it!
