My dance with public speaking fear

What stood out to me was the way my fear of public speaking has woven itself into the fabric of my life. It’s funny, really. I’ve spent countless hours chatting with friends or sharing stories at family gatherings, yet when the spotlight turns toward me in a formal setting, it’s like my brain hits pause.

When I think back to my first experience with public speaking, I remember standing in front of my classmates, palms sweaty, heart racing. I could feel my voice trembling as I tried to share my thoughts on a book we’d read. I thought I had prepared well, but as soon as I looked up and saw those expectant faces, I felt as if I was floating outside my body, watching myself stammer and fumble through my words. It was both humbling and mortifying, and I think that moment planted a seed of anxiety that sprouted every time I faced a similar situation afterward.

Isn’t it strange how our minds work? Even after all these years, I still get that familiar knot in my stomach when I know I have to speak in front of a group. I’ve tried various strategies—deep breathing, rehearsing in front of a mirror, even picturing my audience in their pajamas to lighten the mood. Some days, it helps, and other days, I’m right back to that frightened kid standing in front of the class.

What I’ve learned is that it’s okay to acknowledge that fear rather than fight it. I’ve started to view public speaking not as something to dread but as an opportunity to connect with others. It’s about sharing ideas, experiences, and sometimes just a little vulnerability. I think that’s what resonates with people the most.

I’m curious—how do you approach situations that make you anxious? Do you have any tips or tricks that have worked for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts, especially if you’ve wrestled with something similar. What’s been your experience with stepping into that uncomfortable spotlight?
