My phobia has started making my world smaller. I’ll avoid places, put off simple errands, and tell myself I’ll deal with it later, even when I know avoiding it usually makes the fear worse. Last month I skipped a friend’s dinner because it was at a restaurant with the thing I’m afraid of, then felt stupid and isolated at home.

I want to start facing it in small steps, but even planning that makes me anxious. Has anyone found a manageable first step that didn’t feel completely overwhelming?

@Amy_Austin, skipping the dinner doesn’t make you stupid. Phobias can make even ordinary plans feel like huge tests.

A first step that helped me was making the goal almost ridiculously small, like looking at a photo or standing near the place without going in. I’d decide the time limit beforehand and leave while I still felt in control. It made the next step feel less impossible.

It may also help to tell a trusted friend exactly what support you want, such as sitting near an exit or checking in afterward. Small and repeatable seems better than forcing one massive confrontation.

The part about deciding the time limit beforehand makes a lot of sense. I’ve had better luck when I know I’m not trapped there indefinitely. Even five minutes feels more doable when it’s a choice I made ahead of time.

I’ve also found that telling someone exactly what I need works better than just saying I’m anxious. Asking a friend to stay nearby or not push me to go farther can take some of the pressure off. Then I’m more likely to try again instead of feeling like I failed.
