How shame eating has played a role in my life

This reminds me of a time I really struggled with shame eating. It’s one of those things that creeps up on you, isn’t it? Sometimes, it’s like I’m aware of what I’m doing, but that doesn’t stop me. There have been countless evenings where I found myself reaching for snacks, sometimes mindlessly, while watching TV. It was almost like a way to escape whatever emotions I was feeling at the moment.

What struck me the most was the cycle it created. I’d indulge in something comforting, usually something sweet or salty, and then afterwards, that wave of guilt would hit. It was such a strange juxtaposition—a moment of pleasure quickly followed by shame. I remember thinking, “Why can’t I just enjoy this without the guilt?” It felt like I was trapped in this endless loop of emotional eating and self-criticism.

I started to realize that the shame I felt wasn’t just about the food. It was tied to deeper emotions—stress from work, feeling lonely, or even just having a rough day in general. I began paying attention to those feelings instead. I found that if I could sit with my emotions for a moment, even just to acknowledge them, it helped break that cycle. Sometimes, just talking to a friend or writing in a journal about how I was feeling made a huge difference.

I’m curious, have any of you experienced something similar? How do you navigate those moments when the urge to indulge hits? I think it’s really important to remind ourselves that it’s okay to have those feelings. Finding ways to cope—without judgment—can be a journey, but it’s one worth taking. And hey, it’s all about progress, not perfection, right?
