I’ve been putting off getting help for my addiction because I’m scared of being judged. I already feel enough shame without having to explain every bad decision to someone who looks disappointed.

What I need is a place where I can be honest about how bad things have gotten and still be treated like a person. I’m not expecting anyone to excuse my choices. I just want support that helps me understand what’s behind them and what to do next.

If you’ve found a nonjudgmental service, what helped you feel safe enough to open up?

@Kimberly_Yates, the part about wanting to be treated like a person really makes sense. I was nervous that being honest would just turn into a lecture, but the first decent counselor I spoke with focused more on what was happening and what I needed next.

It helped that I asked upfront how they handle relapse and confidentiality. I also started by sharing one smaller thing before getting into the worst parts. Their response told me pretty quickly whether I felt safe enough to keep talking.

@Kimberly_Yates, asking about confidentiality and how they handle relapse helped me feel less trapped. I didn’t want one mistake to become the only thing they saw when deciding whether I deserved help.

I once started with a counselor by saying I was afraid of being judged, instead of explaining everything right away. They didn’t push me for details, and that made it easier to be honest later.
