I found this really interesting because I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my relationship with food lately. It’s something I’ve grappled with for a while, and honestly, it’s kind of a rollercoaster ride. I didn’t even realize how much I was using food to cope with feelings until I started to pay closer attention.
Recently, I went through a rehab program focused on food addiction, and it was eye-opening, to say the least. At first, I felt like I was walking into a lion’s den. You know that feeling where you’re scared but also a bit curious? I had so many questions swirling in my head: Would this really help? Would I be judged? But when I got there, it was like stepping into a safe space where everyone understood the struggle.
One thing that struck me was how intertwined our emotions can be with what we eat. I always thought I was just a binge eater, but it became clear that I was trying to fill some deeper voids. It was hard to confront that. I mean, I had to face my feelings head-on instead of burying them under pizza and ice cream. It felt raw and real, and sometimes, it was uncomfortable.
I remember one session where we talked about triggers. For me, it was stress and loneliness. It’s funny (or not so funny) how a bad day can turn into a “treat myself” moment that spirals out of control. I think that’s a common theme we all connect with, right?
I also learned about mindfulness and how being present can change our relationship with food. I started trying to savor each bite instead of mindlessly munching while scrolling through my phone. It sounds simple, but it’s so powerful. I found myself enjoying foods in a way I hadn’t in ages, and it made me realize how much I had missed that connection.
I’ve had my ups and downs since finishing rehab, as expected. It’s not a perfect journey, but I’m slowly learning to be kinder to myself. I still have moments when I slip back into old habits, and that’s okay. What’s important is that I’m more aware now and can stop to reflect instead of just reacting.
I’m curious to hear from others about their experiences. Have you ever noticed how emotions play a role in your relationship with food? Or have you tried any strategies that helped you? I think sharing our stories can be a great way to support each other, so I’d love to hear your thoughts!
