Finding a food therapist made a big difference for me

What stood out to me was how much my relationship with food was tied to my overall well-being. For a long time, I didn’t even realize it. I thought I was just someone who enjoyed food, but it wasn’t until I started working with a food therapist that things began to shift for me.

I remember my first session. I was a bit skeptical, to be honest. I thought, “How can talking about food help me feel better?” But, as we dove deeper, I recognized how my eating habits were intertwined with my emotions. It was eye-opening! I’d never really considered how stress or even boredom influenced what I reached for in the pantry.

One of the biggest takeaways for me was learning to listen to my body rather than just eat out of habit or pressure. My therapist encouraged me to try mindful eating. At first, it felt a little silly—sitting with a piece of fruit or a small meal, really focusing on the flavors and textures. But over time, I began to appreciate food in a whole new way. It became less about just fueling up and more about savoring moments.

Honestly, it’s been a game changer. I found myself making more conscious choices, and I started to notice how certain foods made me feel—both physically and emotionally. There’s something empowering about taking control of your eating habits, rather than letting them control you.

If you’re on the fence about seeking out a food therapist, I encourage you to give it a shot. It might feel a little uncomfortable at first, but the insights you gain can be really profound. Have any of you ever considered it? What’s been your experience with the connection between food and mental health? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
