Bouncing between highs and lows after trauma

I found myself reflecting a lot lately on how trauma can really shake up our mental landscape. It’s like being on a rollercoaster that you didn’t even sign up for. One minute, I’m on this incredible high—feeling unstoppable, filled with ideas, full of energy—and then suddenly, I plunge into this deep low where everything feels heavy and gray.

It’s curious how these shifts can happen so quickly. Sometimes, it feels like I’m riding the wave of excitement, and other times, I’m just trying to keep my head above water. I wonder if others experience this too? It can be so isolating, feeling like I’m on this constant seesaw. The highs are amazing, but when the lows hit, it can feel like I’m in a fog that’s hard to shake.

I remember a time when I was feeling particularly invincible. I took on new projects, connected with friends, and just felt… alive. But then, out of nowhere, I’d crash into a phase where even getting out of bed felt like climbing a mountain. I often catch myself wondering if this is linked to past experiences—how they shape our emotional responses and the way we view the world. It’s like I’m still processing everything that’s happened, and somehow, it’s manifesting in these erratic emotional states.

I’m trying to be more gentle with myself during those low periods. It’s easy to fall into the trap of pushing through, but I’ve learned that acknowledging what I feel is important. I find comfort in talking with friends or even journaling about these ups and downs. It helps me to sort through my thoughts and maybe even understand the triggers a bit better.

I’m curious, how do others cope with the highs and lows after trauma? Do you find that talking about it helps? I’d love to hear your experiences. It feels so important to connect and share, especially since so many of us navigate these turbulent waters in one way or another.
