I never expected staying home to affect me this much. The house is busy all day, but I still feel invisible in it. Meals, laundry, errands, and keeping track of everyone’s needs somehow don’t count as doing anything, even though I’m exhausted by the end of the day.

A few weeks ago, I realized I’d gone almost a whole day without having a real conversation with anyone. I was standing at the kitchen counter eating leftovers, and it hit me how lonely I’ve become. I love my family, so I feel guilty even saying that.

I’m depressed and having trouble finding any part of the day that feels like mine. Has anyone found a way to feel like a person again while staying home?

@Elizabeth_Palmer, the part about eating leftovers at the counter really hit me. I started treating lunch as a real break instead of another task. I put my food on a plate, sit somewhere other than the kitchen, and listen to a podcast or call someone for ten minutes.

It sounds small, but having one part of the day that wasn’t for everyone else helped me feel less erased. I also told my family directly that I needed that time, rather than hoping they’d notice. because you mentioned depression, please consider telling your doctor too. You deserve support, not guilt, for feeling this way.

Carol, putting lunch on a plate and leaving the kitchen made a bigger difference for me than I expected. Eating while standing had started to feel like proof that everyone else’s needs came first.

The part about telling your family directly is what I’ve had to work on. I used to wait for someone to notice I was overwhelmed, but now I say, “I’m taking 20 minutes after lunch, please don’t ask me to do anything unless it’s urgent.” It still feels awkward sometimes, but being clear works better than hoping they’ll guess.
